Genesis

  1. 39:1  And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
  2. 2  And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
  3. 3  And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
  4. 4  And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
  5. 5  And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
  6. 6  And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
  7. 7  And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
  8. 8  But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
  9. 9  There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
  10. 10  And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
  11. 11  And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
  12. 12  And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
  13. 13  And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
  14. 14  That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
  15. 15  And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
  16. 16  And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
  17. 17  And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
  18. 18  And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.
  19. 19  And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.
  20. 20  And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
  21. 21  But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
  22. 2  And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
  23. 3  And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
  24. 4  And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
  25. 5  And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
  26. 9  There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
  27. 21  But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
  28. 38:1  And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
  29. 2  And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
  30. 3  And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
  31. 4  And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
  32. 5  And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
  33. 6  And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
  34. 7  And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
  35. 8  And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
  36. 9  And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
  37. 10  And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
  38. 11  Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
  39. 12  And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
  40. 13  And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
  41. 14  And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
  42. 15  When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
  43. 16  And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
  44. 17  And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
  45. 18  And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
  46. 19  And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
  47. 20  And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
  48. 21  Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
  49. 22  And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
  50. 23  And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
  51. 24  And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
  52. 25  When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
  53. 26  And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
  54. 27  And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
  55. 28  And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
  56. 29  And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
  57. 30  And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
  58. Matthew

  59. 1:3  And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
  60. Genesis

  61. 34:1  And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
  62. 2  And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
  63. 3  And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
  64. 4  And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
  65. 5  And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
  66. 6  And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
  67. 7  And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.
  68. 8  And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
  69. 9  And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
  70. 10  And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
  71. 11  And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
  72. 12  Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
  73. 13  And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
  74. 14  And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
  75. 15  But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
  76. 16  Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
  77. 17  But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
  78. 18  And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.
  79. 19  And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
  80. 20  And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
  81. 21  These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
  82. 22  Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
  83. 23  Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
  84. 24  And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
  85. 25  And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
  86. 26  And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
  87. 27  The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
  88. 28  They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
  89. 29  And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
  90. 30  And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
  91. 31  And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
  92. II Samuel

  93. 13:1  And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
  94. 2  And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.
  95. 3  But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.
  96. 4  And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.
  97. 5  And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
  98. 6  So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
  99. 7  Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house, and dress him meat.
  100. 8  So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.
  101. 9  And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
  102. 10  And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
  103. 11  And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.
  104. 12  And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.
  105. 13  And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.
  106. 14  Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.
  107. 15  Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.
  108. 16  And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.
  109. 17  Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.
  110. 18  And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
  111. 19  And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.
  112. 20  And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.
  113. 21  But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.
  114. 22  And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
  115. 23  And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baalhazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king's sons.
  116. 24  And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.
  117. 25  And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.
  118. 26  Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
  119. 27  But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him.
  120. 28  Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.
  121. 29  And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.
  122. 30  And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.
  123. 31  Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.
  124. 32  And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
  125. 33  Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king's sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.
  126. 34  But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
  127. 35  And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king's sons come: as thy servant said, so it is.
  128. 36  And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.
  129. 37  But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.
  130. 38  So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.
  131. 39  And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
  132. II Samuel

  133. 11:4  And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

  135. 19:30  And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
  136. 31  And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
  137. 32  Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
  138. 33  And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
  139. 34  And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
  140. 35  And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
  141. 36  Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
  142. 37  And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
  143. 38  And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
